Music: Filling the Need

To be successful with music, as in every other field, you need to anticipate the need and then fill that need. It’s not about you. It’s about other people. Your music has to reach them. It can't just be all about you showing off your tricks. It has to be something that oter people want and need.

Consider what people want from their music. What do they use it for? Some want to dance to it- so music with a simple, defined beat and solid bass and easy, simple lyrics – often sexually suggestive – is the way to go to fill that need.

But also a lot of people like to sing along in the car. What about them? Easy lyrics, repeated often, in a key that most people can sing in, and in an easily identifiable melody line that they can remember and reproduce will do the trick.

Then there are those who want music as background effect while they are working. For them, something that sets an ambiance of getting work done, keeping up a pace, but no lyrics to hook their involvement and attention. Enough energy to set the mood, but not enough to distract them.

What about exercising? I can’t even think about doing the treadmill with music. For that, I need hard, aggressive, high energy music that pumps the blood up.

Some people want the music for commercial purposes like TV commercials, or TV shows, feature filmscores, etc.

If you can produce music in all these areas, then why not try them all and see how it goes. If you find you can only do one, but you do it well, then focus on that one. Run with it until you have mastered your niche, then expose it to the world.
